Abstract

Nanoparticles of Ag/AgCl, AgCl doped with iron oxide and Ag/AgCl doped with copper oxide were synthesisedfrom silver nitrate solution using Ocimum Killmandscharium leaf extract without any additional source of chlorideions. Formation of nanoparticles was validated by X-ray Powder Diffraction data, Fourier TransformInfraredSpectra and data obtained from Scanning Electron Microscopy coupled with Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy. Doping was observed to affect both the morphological features of the prepared nanoparticles and their antibacterial activity. Copper-doped Ag/AgCl nanoparticles were irregularly shaped with rounded edges, while doping withironresulted in the formation of cube-shaped AgCl nanoparticles. Ag/AgCl nanoparticles, Cu doped Ag/AgCl nanoparticles, and Fe-doped AgCl nanoparticles were all effective against bacterial strains of Pseudomonas, Bacillusand Staphylococcus sp., though Cu doped Ag/AgCl nanoparticles was more effective than the rest. This studyhighlights the significant role of doping in enhancing antibacterial efficacy and in modulating the morphological characteristics of nanoparticles.
